What are wardrobe foundations?
Your wardrobe foundations are a collection of pieces (mainly staples and classics) that work together with versatility and are the key pieces to create a wide variety of outfits.
Your wardrobe foundations are the building blocks of your closet
Benefits of wardrobe foundations
Simplicity: Your wardrobe foundations will consist of staple, basic and neutral items that match each other, helping you get dressed faster and avoiding decision fatigue.
Versatility: A complete collection of wardrobe foundations will include key pieces that will help you add versatility. Allowing you to wear similar items in different combinations making your outfits look fresh.
Timeless: The pieces in your wardrobe foundations are trend-proof and stay relevant over time. Investing in quality items is recommended when creating your wardrobe foundations
Essential items to include in wardrobe foundations
The following items will create a collection of summer wardrobe foundations.
A t-shirt: Don't underestimate the power of a t-shirt. It can help you to add versatility to your closet. You can opt for a graphic tee if that is in tune with your style. Or select a classic black or/and solid white tee. This item is so simple you can get it from any store. But try to find quality items so you won't have to buy new ones next season.
Short-sleeved blouse: Puff sleeves, off-the-shoulder, or just a simple satin cami. Opt for neutral colors so you can mix and match them with your other pieces from your wardrobe.
Cotton trousers: They can be wide leg or straight fit, whichever shape you prefer, a pair of trousers will allow you to dress up your tops for special occasions.
A pair of jean shorts: Denim is a significant component of your wardrobe foundations and is easy to dress up and dress down. Find the fit and shape you like by trying different brands. Once you discover your preferences, get them in different colors, such as black, which will go with almost anything, and a pair of blue, which is universal.
Midi or mini skirt: You can try printed or solid. If you add a print, keep in mind the colors your wardrobe foundations will have, and try to find a pattern that includes those colors. My recommendation for a capsules wardrobe is to try neutral colors like beige, black, or white.
A solid cotton or linen dress: You can go for a little black or any other neutral color. Choose what makes you feel confident, something that goes well with the other pieces in your capsule.
A jumpsuit: Grab and go! This item is my go-to when I don't have enough time to create a complete look. I love all the different styles, and depending on the design, you can dress them up with heeled sandals or make a sporty outfit by adding a pair of white sneakers and sunnies.
Shoes: You'll want at least two pairs of shoes in your wardrobe foundations. A pair of white sneakers will never go out of style because they go with everything. For work or special occasions, you might want something dressier. If you are the kind of person who likes a heel, go for a heel in a more neutral color, such as nude. For those days when you don't feel like walking around in a heel all day, try a dressed-up flat that isn't a sneaker. Go for something neutral, again. Black is perfect: It will go with everything in your closet.
Accesories: Before leaving the house, think about a 3erd item you can add to your outfit to make it stand out and feel special. You can find a good excuse to dress up daily, and accesories can make things more fun. My favorite items to suggest adding to your summer wardrobe foundations are hats and sunglasses. Fashion can also have a function, so don't forget to protect yourself from the sun with your favorite styles.
A belt: Though belts are considered part of the accesories category, and I mentioned that before, I have to add them as a MUST-have. If you are not adding belts to your outfits, you are missing one of the best hacks to level up your basics. Next time you are getting dressed, grab a classic pair of denim shorts and a white tee and add a belt and you'll see how you look go from I grabbed whatever to I put together a cool fit!
How to build your wardrobe foundations?
There is no right or wrong when creating your wardrobe foundations, and this concept can be adapted to any style. The first step is identifying what are your staples, these items are usually classic and relatively neutral, that can be worn time after time and reimagined.
When creating your wardrobe foundations, whether you're buying all-new pieces or looking through what you already have in your closet, choose simple components. Remember, they are the base of your closet.
1. Try Everything On.
If you're going to wear something all the time, it should fit well and feel comfortable. Make sure that you like the cut. Find the silhouette that works best for you by trying on many clothes, and then buy the winner in a few different colors. Everyone's body shape is different, so finding items that truly flatter your body and feel comfortable is essential.
2. Choose Muted Colors.
You want to make sure that your wardrobe foundations are timeless. Colors are often trendy, and thinking about combining different tones can feel overwhelming. Keep your items very neutral because the colors should never go out of style.
3. Invest in High-Quality Pieces.
Your wardrobe foundations are things that are never going out of style, and that's why they can be worth a splurge—high-quality shoes, suits, and outerwear can last for years. Since the capsule collection is meant to be worn over and over, the idea is that you won't have to replace low-quality items constantly.
